Wednesday July 11th the full House of Representatives, which is filled with a republican majority, will vote on a bill called the “Repeal of Obamacare Act.”
This is not the first time the GOP house has voted to repeal President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare reform which protects millions of Americans from bankruptcy in the event that they get sick. In fact the vote on Wednesday will mark the 31st attempt by the GOP to do so. If nothing, they are persistent in their failures.
The very first attempt at repeal came in January 2011 immediately after the republican party assumed the majority position in the house. At the time every single republican voted in favor of a repeal.
Yet when republican leaders have been pressed on this issue to ask for an alternative to the policy they so desperately want removed from the books, they have no answers. Speaker of the House John Bohener has offered absolutely nothing when asked how his party would deal with rising healthcare costs and millions of people who are uninsured. Senator Mitch McConnell, the GOP leader in the senate was quoted saying, “That’s not the point!” when his party’s lack of plan was brought into the discussion.
Those who are able to receive healthcare now when they could not previously would likely say that it is the only point.
The GOP’s decision to allocate their time in such a manner by forcing 31 votes on this issue that has now been litigated all the way to The Supreme Court is bizarre. The republican party was brought to power during the 2010 midterm elections on a promise of job creation, and as of this writing have not passed a single jobs bill.
They have been in power for nearly 20 months and still have not made good on their promises. Will they ever?
